Rendering Regime
25/10/2015 - 13/11/2015
Rendering Regime is presented as a theme to outline the reading of the works of paintings from Jakarta that became the reflection of artist’s political statement and position against the condition of his social surroundings. From one hand, it suggests the attempt of “rendering” or the process of creating visuals, artistic ideas and structure by the artist. On the other hand, the term “regime” can stand for the rules, system, or condition that appears during such creative process. From social-politics perspective, this term at large tries to represent the present state of mental relation between the government, the media and the society. The attempt to show 'good' personal image through media by covering numerous issues with another story, and thus in the process turning the questions of power and rules become more difficult to understand.
As an artistic medium, in the beginning, the attributes of painting were not merely an expression tool to use, but also served as a communication and documentation tools. These attributes came from reality that painting often being utilized as a popular medium for propaganda that could be affected by many things. One of them is politics. This issue about position and political statement is what will be highlighted in this exhibition. The widespread of contemporary art practice now, also inherits such choice of position. Technology development and the presence of new media like video, internet, and social media, take part to influence our perception about artwork nowadays.
This exhibition tries to comprehend the painter’s artistic working method, as a positioning statement-political or apolitical - and as researching issue related to social-politics matter in Jakarta. Each artist is being given a broad working space to enter the closest perspective with their practices, which at the same time to open possibilities for exploring wider social themes. How the artist explains his artistic choice and how far painting medium can talk about social-politics issues? How the artist sees and places painting as a medium in the growth of contemporary art?

Kaum Urbanit, Cap gome 2003
2/04/2003 - 30/04/2003
This is an excerpt of the exhibition's review on Jakarta Post - by Carla Bianpoen
For many, the name alone of Hardi may evoke a sense of discontent. For them, he is the troublemaker, the one who likes to go against the stream. For others, however, he is an artist who has taken a keen interest in life as it revolves or evolves for the less fortunate.
His 17th solo exhibition currently running until April 30 at Galeri Milenium, titled Kaum Urbanit, Cap Go Meh 2003, presents just a fraction of his all-encompassing interests and concerns.
A lot of reddish-orange hues fill his canvases, coloring the scenes of Chinese-Indonesians celebrating the freedom to profess their ancestral beliefs. Contesting the general view that the Chinese must be rich, he says he saw their living conditions in Chinatown. Many live in hardship, he says, admiring their perseverance not to give up, and to survive.
""But it is his black-and-white, sketch-like works that steal the show. Using Japanese ink, his brush seems to emanate an energy that generates the dynamic of his heartbeat. As he sympathizes with the lot of unemployed laborers and victims of the Bali bombings, he also notes women in their multiple roles, experiences and appearances. It seems he paints them as they are, realistic without beautification. But then, isn't beauty in the eye of the beholder? Apparently, for Hardi, it is the bare facts of life that matter most.
There is a painting, the ideal nude, with large breasts, strong arms, an image that may be perceived as contrary to the conventional mode. But then, there is also another image featuring a woman with soft facial features holding a big fish, which, he says, is to depict the role that women play at the fish market. Perhaps these are metaphors for all that women mean to the life of mankind.
The exhibition is held at Galeri Milenium, Kompleks Pertokoan D'Best, Blok B23, Jl. RS Fatmawati 15, South Jakarta, Phone 7507828, 7703624
