Kris & Janker
In a discussion held at Fadli Zon Library, Jakarta, December 2009, Hardi take a peek into the Kris world and fell in love. As a man born and raised in Java, Kris is not something new for Hardi. But, he sees how Kris is a big part of Indonesia's heritage (and have been acknowledge by UNESCO in 2005)and how it is in dire need of a voice to preserve it. So the idea for Keris For The World began.
Hardi did his homework well. He interact with the people, or mpu, who spent their life making Kris. And also the collectors. He noticed how Kris was always associated with mistical powers; and how it can bring fortune, luck and power to its owner. As an artist, Hardi sees Kris as a work of art and enjoy it as an object of beauty. So he started designing them and modernize its image, so that Indonesian people wont be affraid in collecting Kris, as a part of Indonesia's rich culture.
After he dwelles with Kris and its creation process, Hardi takes it a step forward. He began playing with the idea on creating a heirloom that combines the Javanese sword - Kris, with the Sundanese's weapon - Spear (Kujang). The merging of these two heirlooms seems out of this world considering the dark history between Java and Sunda that leave the two strained. This is the day Hardi created a weapon that bridges the gap between these two cultures. He named it Jangker (KuJang-Keris). It's curvy shapes mixed with high-quality nickel that makes the design, made this weapon a national treasure. It created huge controversy, nonetheless, amongst the Kris community. But, as Hardi launches the book "Keris for the World" and "Jangker" - people loved the idea and it's beautiful execution. And again, Hardi made history.
